Measuring to Transform: Impact Measurement Guide for Civil Society Organizations

Abstract

This guide provides civil society organizations with key information for understanding and applying evaluation methods to measure their social impact. At Dejusticia, we view evaluation as a tool for determining the extent to which a social or community initiative has positively improved conditions for a given population. We also believe that social impact measurement is an act of care and collective memory that helps us reflect on the path traveled, recognize achievements, and identify challenges. This guide is divided into five sections that reflect our understanding of social impact measurement. In the first, we discuss why it is important for civil society organizations to develop evaluation methodologies. In the second, we present five principles that should guide evaluation processes, including diversity, equity, and inclusion. In the third, we explain the stages and methodological tools involved in conducting an evaluation process. In the fourth, we provide a brief overview of the evaluation process for Dejusticia’s Enlaza Strengthening Program. Finally, in the fifth section, we offer concluding recommendations to help readers begin or strengthen their own social impact measurement efforts.
